The Power of Meditation
“Imagine that meditation can make you have a younger brain. It can also cause your brain to grow new neurons, contrary to the antiquated theory that was once said this was impossible.” -Joe Dispensa
For those of you that are trying to heal, you should know it will be very difficult to do so without finding a sense of calm and well being in your life.
If I had been diagnosed with my third autoimmune ailment six months before I did, I think I would have been in such a state of depression and anger that I would have been sick for the rest of my life. Yet, when it came, I not only held it together, I did so calmly and peacefully. My healing, thank God, had already started with emotional and spiritual wellness.
You see about three months before being diagnosed, meditation came into my life. My usual symptoms of feeling tired, achy and weak had left me feeling frustrated that I wasn’t able to do the physical things that would make me feel better. So, I decided meditation was something I could actually do and it might be good for me. Yet, it wasn’t as easy to slow my body and my mind down as I thought.
I realized very quickly that meditation is a real discipline. I remember setting a timer for just 5 minutes and saying to myself, “you have to sit here for five minutes, no matter what, if the dog wants to go out, or the phone rings I have to stay put.” My meditation gradually went from 5, 10, 15 minutes. Now I meditate about 30 minutes each morning and 15 minutes in the evening.
After only a few short weeks of meditating, I started feeling less stressed. Things that usually bothered me, didn’t matter that much anymore. Things didn’t change, per say, in my life, my health still wasn’t good, but I felt calmer about it.
In meditation you learn to follow your breath and when you meditate on a regular basis, you start to use that technique in daily life. Negative thoughts that weren’t serving me were replaced with nice cleansing breathes. Little by little the negative thoughts stopped coming.
For me, mediation was one of my first steps in healing. For so many years I had been trying and praying so hard to be healed. I had been on every diet and tried everything out there to heal, but I never worked on my state of mind.
The body mind connection is real and when your mind is constantly going in all directions, it causes interruption in our brain patterns that ultimately creates chaos in the body. Meditation alone will not heal you, but it will bring your body into a more harmonious place so it can aid in your healing.
Scientifically, studies have show that when you meditate you can actually increase the size of your brain. The grey matter which controls memory, learning and your emotions grow after about eight weeks of mediation. At the same time the amygdala which controls our fears and anxiety decreases.
Other known affects of meditation are improved concentration, decreased stress, anxiety and depression, while improving insomnia and enhancing self awareness.
Many times shortly after meditation, a thought, idea or decision will come to me that I had been trying to figure out. When you are in a meditative state, your third eye chakra, which controls your intuition, knowledge and reflection opens up. Therefore, many people see things much clearer after meditation.
Meditation helped to bring me the answers I was seeking. The universe opened up the idea of great possibilities to me. Which, ultimately led me to start this blog.
Meditation has helped to bring joy back in my life.
This is something everyone can do and I really believe it is critical for mental and physical healing. If you have trouble meditating on your own, there are apps for guided meditations. Head space is a great one or you can find free ones on youtube or other places on the web.
Fragrantheart.com is one of my favorites and has great free guided mediation for healing.
However you have to incorporate it, make meditation a part of your daily life. Your body and mind will thank you!
